This activity will focus on “selecting” a quantitative measure (or measures) to be used in assessing the client and measuring outcome for your practice evaluation.
Client Goals
Client Goals
Client Objectives
Physical Abuse (struck girlfriend with open hand)
Reduce physical abuse
Client will attend a domestic violence group 1x a week for 12 weeks. Domestic Violence Group
Alcohol Abuse (has gotten drunk every night; anger outburst due to drinking)
Eliminate alcohol use
Client will attend AA meetings 2x a week for 12 weeks Alcoholics Anonymous Meetings (AA)
Anger (he threw girlfriend’s cell phone against the wall; hitting doors; kicked girlfriend’s car 2x) Eliminate aggression toward ex-girlfriend Client will receive 45 minutes of a CBT intervention for 12 weeks Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy (CBT)
Above is the table that was used in an earlier Workshop which focused on determining practice (client) goals. You needed to create something similar for the earlier Assignment. For this assignment you may use the same table that you created for the earlier Assignment. All you need to do is look at the “Client Goals” column and decide how you plan to measure each one. For example, there are three client goals above that will need to be measured for my practice evaluation that include reducing physical abuse, eliminating alcohol use, and eliminating aggression.
Sometimes the best way to find suitable measurements for variables is to search the literature to see how other evaluators measured these same client goals. I find that the best way to display the information for this assignment is to use another table. Look at the table below to see how I displayed this information for the three client goals above:
Client Goals Plan to Measure the Goal
Reduce physical abuse
Have the girlfriend complete the Physical Abuse Questionnaire (PAQ)
Eliminate alcohol use
Have the client complete the Alcohol Use Disorders Identification Test (AUDIT)
Eliminate aggression toward ex-girlfriend
Ask the client’s girlfriend if the client is displaying fewer acts of aggression toward her
Upon successful completion of this assignment, you will be able to:
Design and support a research plan for clinical practice (PLO 13)
Analyze quantitative and qualitative research methods and findings (PLO 13)
Suggest implications for practice based on research findings (PO 13; ILO 5)

Important Note about Videos: Please keep in mind that if you are asked to watch any video in this course and it does not work, this is okay. In this world of technology and easy access to information, all you need to do is search for more relevant videos using the relevant terms for this Workshop. So, for this workshop, open YouTube and type the words “Reliability and Validity” and “Standardized Scales” and it should show dozens of videos to choose from. You can also use similar keywords to search for relevant videos. Keep in mind that whatever video(s) you decide to utilize for your assignment, you must cite them in your reference section. The general format for citing a video in APA is below:
Author, A. A. [Screen name]. (year, month day). Title of video [Video file]. Retrieved from http://xxxxx
Review the rubric to make sure you understand the criteria for earning your grade.
Read the textbook chapter on “The dependent variable: Measuring the outcomes.”
Read pages 419 – 445 from the article, Evaluating Cognitive-behavioral Treatment of Schizophrenia: Four Single-case Studies.

For your Assignment activity:
Identify and discuss at least one quantitative measure to be used in assessing the client and measuring outcome.
For each client goal there should be at least one measure.
Include a discussion of what is being measured, when it will be measured, who will measure, and with what it will be measured.
Discuss the quantitative measure’s reliability and validity (psychometric properties).
Identify and discuss one qualitative measurement and the rationale for its use.
Describe how you will use it in your study and how it will augment (help validate) the quantitative data you collect.
This assignment should be two pages in length (this does not include the title or reference pages) and be completed in a Word document
