Tabor Christanelli
TITLE: The Road to Saving Lives
ATTENTION: You’ve all seen grey’s anatomy, right? In case you have not, to summarize this show
takes place in a hospital and is centered around surgeons. Although their crazy lives have a lot of
Hollywood drama, and they spend hours operating on individuals, their work load, setting, and desire to
save lives are much like a family physician. Since I was in elementary school, I’ve had a profound love
for math and science. Having family members involved in the healthcare system has also inspired me to
choose a career in the medical field.
THESIS STATEMENT: Hello! My Name is Tabor Christanelli, and each factor I’ve mentioned has
played a role in my dream of pursuing a career as a family physician.
PREVIEW: From describing daily job duties and work environments to discussing the specific required
certifications, today I’ll be informing you all about the life of a Family Physician.
TRANSITION: I think Meredith Grey and Christina Yang would agree that doctors get a lot
accomplished each day! I’ll be kicking things off by explaining the specific tasks a Family Physician
completes regularly.
I. Job Duties of a Family Physician
A. Family Physicians diagnose and treat patients’ illnesses and/or injuries. (Bureau of
Labor Statistics, 2021)
B. Family Physicians supply preventive care such as well-care visits which are given to
entire families throughout their life.
C. Family Physicians update charts and order/ review patient tests.
TRANSITION: According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, 119,300 family medicine physicians were
employed in 2019. A positive outlook is ahead for this career with a projected employment growth rate of
at least 6 percent. Let me explain what a family physician’s work environment consists of.
II. Work Environment for a Family Physician
A. Family Physicians can be employed in a variety of distinct locations including a
private physician’s office, healthcare organization, or hospital.
B. Family Physicians usually work full time. Some work more than 40 hours (about 1
and a half days) per week. Many physicians and surgeons work long shifts, which may include irregular
and overnight hours or being on call. (Bureau of Labor, Statistics 2021)
C. Family Physicians have an elevated level of social interaction because they are
constantly talking with patients, parents, and medical staff. Working indoors and as part of a team also
defines their working conditions. (Illinois Career Information System- CIS)
TRANSITION: A demanding work environment and schedule may be in store for a family physician,
but the outcome is one of the highest wages out of all professions. Medscape.com states, the average
overall national physician salary is $299,000. Last, I will be talking about what qualifications are needed
to pursue this career.

III. Specific Qualifications Required for a Career as a Family Physician
A. Becoming a physician requires quite a bit of schooling and training. Typical
requirements include a bachelor’s degree, medical school degree (completion takes 3-4 years), internship
and residency programs (also 3-4 years). Additionally, procedures such as delivering babies can be
possible after gaining extra certifications.
B. A medical doctorate from an internationally accredited board and certification of
completion of a residency training (in an ACGME-accredited program) are needed. The United States
Medical Licensing Examination (USMILE) must be passed to practice medicine in the U.S. (Docinfo)
C. An empathetic and caring doctor must possess certain qualities including
compassion, patience, and leadership. Certain skills are also required by a physician such as physical
stamina, problem-solving, and organizational skills. (Bureau of Labor, Statistics 2021)

TRANSITION: Mentioned above are only a few necessities needed to become a doctor, and their list of
responsibilities goes on and on indeed!
SUMMARY: Thank you for listening. It’s been an enjoyable experience informing you about a family
physician’s duties, work environment, and the requirements one must have to become one.
CLOSING: As Doctor Shepherd says in many episodes of Grey’s Anatomy, “It’s a beautiful day to save
lives.” My goal as a doctor will be to alleviate pain, preserve health, and ultimately save lives.
