4-Day Work Week
Recently, most employers have shifted to a 4-day working week instead of the five days of work. This approach has seemingly become more prevalent during the Covid-19 pandemic as many workers were forced to work from their homes. This shift has resulted in immediate benefits for the organizations and the employers, as brought out in this essay. In her article “A 4-day work week might be exactly what the US needs right now,” White argues that the shift has encouraged productivity in the workplace. Precisely, she claims that the employees are in a better physical and mental state to help an organization achieve the best results. She points out in her article that the shift has encouraged improved “work-life balance, improved employee satisfaction, retention and mental health.” The author supports her argument by considering companies that implemented this approach into their working environment during the pandemic. She developed that these members reported focusing on their “work more, and relax more.” Organizations, on the other hand, have witnessed significant profitability and success. White established the 4-day work week gave room for more work that translated to effective organizations. Although White’s case on the 4-day work week is significantly convincing, some proponents like Bansal argue that the shift has given room to overworking and under productivity in the organization. In her article “Has Covid-19 killed the 4-day work week?” she reports that employees have worked a lot more than before the pandemic. Specifically, she develops that “work days are not only longer but more intense.” Conversely, supporters of this working structure and employers would argue that since workers don’t have to commute, they have more time on their plates to organize their activities. Equally, White argues that the 4-day work week has encouraged flexible schedules so that workers are not paid on the hours of work but the outcomes. This way, the employees will have enough time for work and rest.
